First Baptist Church among The Nyishi
In 1926, Dinanath Marak, a Garo evangelist succeeded them. He not only worked among the Nyishis of plains but also attempted to reach the hills Nyishis with the Gospel in 1927. Because of his initiative, the first Nyishi Baptist Church, among the plains Nyishi, was established at Rangajan village (now under Assam) in 1931. He baptized five Nyishis, eleven Miris and some others.
The vigorous effort from people like Mr. Nara Sensu, Mr.Yowa Tado and other mission workers like Mr.Tosin, Tabia Begi, Ekhin Chimir, and Dinanath Marak played vital role in establishment of the first Nyishi Baptist Church at Rangajan village in 1931 (now under Assam). As the first Church of the Nyishi tribe, it took up the sole burden of proclaiming the Gospel among its own people visiting numbers of villages in the vicinity sharing the Gospel. This church became a mission epicentre for Nyishi and an eye opener for many of the other Nyishi villages spiritually and in secular fields as well.
After the establishment of the first church, there was no immediate establishment of next churches. However, the Gospel had been spreading continuously, and it took two decades to establish the second Nyishi Baptist Church at Kakoi village in 1951. These first two Nyishi Baptist Churches were established within the Nyishis of plain areas limited within them only. The Gospel among the hills Nyishis was not attempted till then.
The Talo Baptist Church
The Talo Baptist Church at Talo village was established in 1962 which became a turning point in the history of the Nyishi Baptist Churches. There were already two Nyishi Baptist Churches in the plain areas before 1962 but the first Nyishi Baptist Church among the hill Nyishis was established only in 1962. Students such as Toko Topu, Nich Sakha, Toko Chilly, and Nich Temi etc from the John Firth Mission School, Lakhimpur initiated the establishment of this Church. They were the first students to preach the Gospel to their own villagers and started worship services in their own village. In other words, the Talo Baptist Church was the mother Church within Nyishi tribe and appointment of Mr. Taying Bat as an official second License Holder evangelist among the hill Nyishis that marked the real start of evangelism among Nyishi tribe.
The Talo Baptist Church became the epicentre from which the Gospel spread in different directions Especially among the hill Nyishis such as churches like Panya, Joram, Jara, Neelam, Deed, Seya, Dem, Kugitago, Sito, Nyiolibar, Takho, Tago, Chullyu, Tao, Karoi, Cher, Pech, Khemli, Laptap, Lekeng, Yoglu, Gotopu etc. By 1967, the Gospel reached Sagalee area where many Nyishis of the area embraced Christianity accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior. In one of an incident, Mr. Nabam Tulon, son of Nabam Taram of Nimte village Sagalee was raised from the dead through prayer in the name of Jesus Christ. Having seen this great miracle with their owneyes, many Nyishi people became Christians in 1971, during Christmas at Pech village where Mr.Taying Bat baptized 114 Nyishis people. The Gospel spread like a wild fire among the hill Nyishis reaching 468 Baptist churches among the Nyishi tribe at present. The believers, especially the Christian students from this church took up the responsibility of sharing the Gospel not only with their own villagers, but also with their entire tribe. They carried out their responsibility of being pioneers for the Lord and spiritually and socially liberated their own people from the bondage of Satan.
